Your site is slow. This is where the seconds are!
Visitors do not wait. If loading takes more than three seconds, a good part of your traffic is gone before the page arrives — and on mobile data in a high street that is reached sooner than you think. Google knows this, and uses speed in deciding whom to show.
Slowness almost always has the same four causes, and they are not equally expensive to fix. Below, in order of what saves most per euro.
The four suspects!
Images straight from the camera
By far the most common. A four-megabyte photo shown 400 pixels wide is a hundred times heavier than it needs to be. Resizing and converting to a modern format is cheap and gains the most.
Plugins doing each other's job twice
Every plugin drags its own code along, including on pages where it does nothing. Twenty plugins for five functions is not unusual and costs you seconds.
Trackers and external scripts
Chat, maps, fonts, three analytics packages: each of them is a connection to another server before your page is finished. Half can often go without anyone missing it.
Cheap shared hosting
On a server with a thousand other sites your response time is not yours. Moving is usually half a day of work and sometimes gains more than all the rest combined.
Measure, repair, measure again!
We start with a measurement on real devices, not only a score from a testing page. That score is a means, not an end: a site scoring 100 where nobody can find anything still sells nothing.
Then we work in order of return, measuring again after each change. So you know exactly what you paid for. An average clean-up costs between 450 and 1,200 euro and usually halves the load time.
- Measured on real devices
- Images resized and converted
- Needless scripts removed
- Fonts loaded locally
- Caching set up properly
- A follow-up measurement, figures side by side
